I’m excited to begin my tenure as the President of the Durham Region Home Builders’ Association for the 2021-2022 term. As a director on the board, I have seen how far the Association has come over the last several years, especially on the advocacy front.
Our Association has seen many “wins,” from reductions in development charge increases to the formation of Building Industry Liaison Teams at municipalities across the Region. With the formation of our Government Relations Committee, we have been able to be at the forefront of some of the biggest challenges our industry has faced at a municipal, regional and provincial level.
We have worked hard to cement good working relationships with municipal and regional staff and believe that the best way forward is through collaboration.
As we look to the year ahead, we know that our team is going to be busy as municipalities across the Region get to work with new policies and programs. At the forefront of our advocacy work is the continuing affordability crisis, which will shape many of the discussions moving forward. As many of the regional municipalities start looking into implementing their own green standards, we will ensure that we are a stakeholder at the table and that we advocate for our members. We will continue to work with the Region towards a retrofit program that will help make older stock homes more efficient. With Envision Durham (the Region’s Municipal Comprehensive Review) coming to a close, we will ensure that our members voices are heard at the Regional level to help shape a plan that will grow the Region in a responsible way to accommodate the over 650,000 people expected to move into Durham Region through to 2051.
As always, our best work comes with the help of volunteers – members of our Association who generously share their time, expertise and knowledge to help us effectively work with municipalities and the Region to develop policies that promote building in Durham Region. We are always looking for more help at our GR table. If you are interested in helping shape DRHBA’s advocacy, contact Stacey at firstname.lastname@example.org.
COVID-19 has been the headline for the last 18 months and we are all hoping that it will soon be a thing of the past. With that in mind, DRHBA is looking forward to putting on our best events this year, with safety as our top priority, from our golf tournament to our Awards of Excellence, with lots of member events mixed in for good measure.
I’m looking forward to working with the board and our committees, and engaging with our members during my term as president.
